Time to Reprice Your Life Insurance

If only everything you had to buy were like life insurance. Comparison-shopping for policies is easy, and prices have been going down for more than a decade. For example, a healthy 40-year-old man paid at least $995 per year for a $500,000 term-insurance policy with a 20-year rate guarantee in 1994. Now, the same policy would cost him as little as $355. And you don't have to be in the best of health to find good deals. Until recently, it was nearly impossible to buy life insurance if you had been diagnosed with cancer. Several years after completing treatment you might have been able to find a policy, but you would probably have had to pay two to three times as much as a healthy individual. Today, however, some patients who have had breast or prostate cancer, as well as diabetes and coronary-artery disease, are eligible for policies at standard rates.

How to beat the insurers' age limits

LOBBY groups for the elderly accused the insurance industry of blacklisting the retired, effectively trapping them in their homes, at a conference last week held to highlight the problems faced by the over-65s when it comes to buying insurance.

Age Concern and Help the Aged published a damning study, titled 'Insurance and Age: Exploring behaviour, attitudes and discrimination', which revealed research showing that one in five are unable to get any kind of quote.

Going beyond money, benefits

When 5,300 Houston janitors went on strike last fall, they were seeking a raise to $8.50 an hour, paid family health insurance and full-time work.

But city of Houston employees, who'll begin contract negotiations today, haven't been as focused on pay and benefits.

The Houston Organization of Public Employees, which represents 13,000 employees at City Hall, are looking for a better performance evaluation system and a chance to offer ideas on how to improve city services, according to union officials.

"I think voice is more important than more money," said Damon Russell, a truck driver in the public works department and a member of the new 38-employee negotiating team.

Employees want respect at work and to feel a sense of pride for doing a good job for their fellow Houstonians, said Russell, who was recently promoted and now earns $9.42 an hour.

Utah State University Student Health Insurance Costs Decline

LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- The price of student health insurance at Utah State University will decrease about 15 percent next school year, university officials said.

The lower costs are a result of fewer claims being made in 2005 and 2006. The school's least expensive health insurance plan will drop from $2,093 per individual to $1,780, and from $7,305 per couple to $6,210 for the 2007-2008 school year.

USU insurance coordinator Noell Hansen said he hopes insurance costs will remain stable. "I hope that we wouldn't see a significant increase where the price would jump right back up in a year," Hansen said. "It's hard to say because it will depend on usage (of the system)."

The lower insurance costs come as student leaders discuss asking administrators to make student health insurance mandatory.

Ready or not, new graduates push into the real world

In this area, most high school seniors are preparing to go off to college and a good number are joining the military. They all have set plans for at least a couple of years if not longer.

College students are still under their parents' wings, whether they like it or not. These young adults have a sense of security. Despite living in a dormitory or a rented house, they still have a home to go back to during school breaks. Many people are still covered by their parents' health and auto insurance plans, and receive financial help from Mom and Dad, as well as the government.

Graduation changes everything.

Leaving college is an exciting time in anyone's life, but it's also a somewhat scary era, too.

Even if you don't have children or own property, you still get tied down at some point after college.

Grindhouse Junket Report, Part 1: QT Talks Future Grindhouse ...

The Weinstein Company wasn't content to just hit people over the head with a Grindhouse-sized double feature from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. No, they also thought they'd issue a double-whammy and hit the press over the head with a massive junket, providing no less than fifteen actors, and the two directors, for our pleasure. If you can imagine trying to take notes while Quentin Tarantino goes off on tangents at a million miles a minute, then you have a small taste of what we were exposed to. Next time, bring on the mutant zombies, I say.Thankfully, we got to sit down with practically everyone in this film (no Bruce Willis or Michael Parks, sadly) and chat. Who surprised me the most? Hands down -- Freddy Rodriguez. He is one cool cat with a really great attitude and background. Who knew he was from Chicago? Well, er ...

Teachers: School district refusing to bargain

IRONWOOD -- Ironwood teachers, represented by the Michigan Education Association, have filed an unfair labor practice charge against the Ironwood Area School District. MEA representatives will travel to Lansing for a Michigan Employment Relations Commission hearing May 15 to have the group's case heard. The school board will also be represented by its attorneys at the hearing.

The teachers' union charges the school district refuses to negotiate its salary increase demands, while the school board contends it has negotiated in good faith, and is unable to -- under a state-imposed deficit reduction plan -- pay salary increases for the 2006-07 school year.

Teachers at the district's three schools last negotiated with the school board Oct. 26, but both sides failed to reach an agreement.

Uefa launches second probe into fan violence

European football's governing body, Uefa, has launched an investigation into the violence in the stands during Tottenham's Uefa Cup quarter-final clash with Sevilla last night. The new probe is in addition to Uefa's probe into clashes between Manchester United supporters and Italian police when trouble flared up in their Champions League game with Roma on Wednesday.Problems in Seville are believed to have started before the game with both sets of supporters throwing objects at each other while police moved in to separate the supporters while the game progressed on the field.Seville had asked Uefa last week if the game could be moved due to its proximity to Easter festivities in the city but the governing body rejected their request. It is reported that seven Spurs fans and one police officer required hospital treatment for injuries suffered during the incident.Tottenham said in a club statement: "Our initial reports suggest that there was no fan-to-fan fighting at any stage of the proceedings.

Bartuška: Energy security is elusive

Q: Why then did the original report draw exact conclusions, such as the need for more nuclear power? It seems as if it was incomplete, which is one of Bursks criticisms.

A: I dont think it was incomplete. Its a broad work of many people. I agree with Bursk that there are some things that could be added. But our oil and gas dependency is something energy savings or biofuels cant change dramatically. There also seems to be consensuswith the exception of the MPthat well need more energy sources and power plants.

Q: Isnt there concern that the country is dismissing the potential of renewable energy too quickly? Theres still time to reach the government target of 8 percent of renewables by 2008.

A: Britain set a target of 10 percent by 2010, discovered it couldnt meet it and made a new target of 20 percent by 2020.

The Education of David Stockman

In 1980, David Stockman was selected to be the budget director for the incoming Reagan Administration. Soon afterwards, William Greider approached Stockman and asked if he could write about his experiences in the budget office. Stockman agreed. When the article appeared in The Atlantic, it created a firestorm of controversy. Stockman, who had spoken too freely of his reservations about the Administration's policies, was, in his words, "taken to the woodshed" by the president.

Costco vs. Sam’s Club

The nation's biggest clubs, Costco and Sam's Club, with 95 million cardholders between them, might seem like clones. But there are differences that can guide your choice if you haven't joined, or lead you to switch clubs. To determine which one deserves your membership ($40 to $100 a year), we shopped at both, compared their prices with those charged by competitors, interviewed experts, and reviewed data from readers surveyed by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. The highlights: Despite the clout of Wal-Mart, Sam's Club's parent, as the largest retailer on the planet, readers gave higher overall scores to Costco for groceries (better perishables), electronics and small appliances (lower prices), and eyeglasses (better service).

Return policies are generous, but Sam's Club is superior for electronics.

NI houses lead price growth

House prices in Northern Ireland rose by 14.6 per cent in the last three months, the latest housing monitor shows, contributing to annual inflation of 9.5 per cent in Britain. Building society Nationwide says that the growth experienced in the province is the fastest since its own records began in 1973. Nationwide's last quarterly report showed that annual house price inflation stood at 9.3 per cent in the UK. In the last three months in London meanwhile, property values went up at their quickest rate for four years. But Nationwide warns that the overall yearly growth of 9.5 per cent is being fuelled principally by houses in Northern Ireland and the capital, with property values in the north of England increasing at half the rate of their southern counterparts. The building society's chief economist Fionnuala Earley explained that the "northern and north-west regions and Wales saw the biggest slowdown in the annual rate of house price growth".
