Nationwide Rates Set To Rise

31--TALLAHASSEE -- Arbitrators have overruled the state and will allow Nationwide Insurance to raise homeowners' premiums by an average of 54 percent. The increase by the Tampa Bay area's second-largest insurer applies to hurricane and nonhurricane coverage, though the amount will vary by location. Nationwide spokesman Eric Hardgrove said the company will implement the increase "as soon as possible." Nationwide, which has 240,000 policyholders in Florida and 42,005 in the Tampa Bay area, sought a 71 percent rate increase in July, but regulators rejected it. The company then filed for arbitration and won the case during hearings earlier this month. The ruling was released Friday. Under the original 71 percent average request, increases for the Tampa Bay area varied widely. Hillsborough County was projected to be 49.8 percent; Pinellas, 134.6 percent; Pasco, 73.7 percent; and Polk, 43.7 percent.

Goodbody Economic Consultants report says Irish health insurance ...

Goodbody Economic Consultants today published a report entitled, Improving the Regulation of Health Insurance, which provides a comprehensive review of current issues in the private health insurance market and also outlines a series of recommendations for corrective action which the consultants recommend are implemented with immediate effect.

The report, commissioned by VIVAS Health, has been produced in order to contribute solutions to the range of factors which are creating the dysfunctional private health insurance market that currently exists in Ireland.

The Goodbody report finds that the market is extremely uncompetitive primarily as a result of VHIs dominance. It is calling for the suspension of risk equalization payments until the VHI no longer has a position of dominace and is subject to the same regulation as its competitors.

I knew it was a big fire, he said as he milled around the apartments charred ruins Saturday. By the time I got here, the whole apartment was completely engulfed.

Letter: La. needs primary-care doctors

Long before Katrina and Rita struck, Louisiana was struggling to provide health care in a state where one in five people, or about 800,000 residents, have no health insurance.

More than 18 months later, the demand for medical services remains at crisis levels, but the number of primary-care physicians is at a critical low. In New Orleans, for instance, the number of primary-care doctors is down nearly 80 percent.

The LSU and Tulane health science centers, meanwhile, are seeing a continuing drop in clinical faculty needed to teach the next generation of physicians. That’s important because our medical schools in New Orleans and Shreveport train three out of four medical professionals practicing in Louisiana.

Because physicians tend to practice where they train, our growing shortage of doctors, nurses and medical technologists is very worrisome, and something must be done to stop this downward spiral.

Hospira Introduces 5GHz Advanced Wireless Security Platform For ...

4/10/07 - Hospira, Inc. (NYSE: HSP) introduced a new wireless platform for its medication infusion devices that incorporates leading-edge authentication standards and encryption protocols to assist hospitals in securely transferring data and complying with patient confidentiality regulations. The new technology also provides the first three- in-one wireless multi-band module for an infusion system, enabling hospitals to select any of three frequency modes for communication.

The platform's expanded security options help ensure only designated, approved hospital staff access clinical data transmitted between the devices and hospital information technology systems as part of the intravenous (I.V.) medication administration process. This can help healthcare providers more readily comply with patient confidentiality regulations, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, in securing patient data against inadvertent release.

Is Search Engine Optimization Mainstream?

I prefer the term search engine marketing to search engine optimization. As Ive written about before, search engine optimization sounds too much like build it and they will come as opposed to actively and aggressively marketing a clients website, brand, and image.

Which life policy?

Life insurance is nothing more than a way of protecting yourself and your family from financial hardship in the event of death or critical illness. What type of life insurance policy (or policies) you need depends on the degree of protection you require.

Another important decision you will have to make is whether you insure only your own life (single life policy), or both your own and your partner's life (joint life policy). A single life plan pays out on the death of the named 'life assured'. Some plans also pay out if the life assured develops a terminal illness at least 18 months before the end of the policy.

A joint life plan may pay out when the first of the lives assured dies (joint life-first death) or on the second death. First-death plans are suitable for family cover, second-death plans for providing sums to pay Inheritance Tax bills.

Solving Long-Term Insurance Hassles

To provide an insurance blanket for their later years, more than 8 million Americans now hold what are known as long-term care policies. Some have paid tens of thousands of dollars of premiums over the years on the assumption that, once they become infirm and no longer can live at home, their policies will pay for a long-term care facility. Yet as The New York Times reported last week, financial troubles within this insurance business, combined with lax regulation, have resulted in thousands of elderly people being denied claims, many of them unfairly. In California alone, insurers denied one in every four claims for long-term care in 2005, one of the highest rates in the country. Many elderly people and their families report that they encounter overwhelming red tape and delays in getting their claims reviewed and decided.
