Why the rich should now be made to pay

Britain remains a society with too many inequalities, too many barriers to opportunity for those at the bottom. "Not enough redistribution!" say some. If only things were so simple. Redistribution there must be, but much more besides.

Average income in the UK has grown substantially since 1997 - 2.4 per cent a year to the end of 2005. London has had the highest rises. However, if differences in house prices are taken into account, there is far less variation between London and other areas in spending power. There has actually been considerable redistribution towards pensioners (a term I dislike), single parents and children. The proportion of older people living in poverty is smaller than the average for the population as a whole. In 1997 there were 13.8 million people living in poverty, as measured after housing costs, or 10.2 million before housing costs; these figures have fallen to 11.4 million and 9.2 million.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd has publicly reprimanded Talam Corp Bhd for breaches of the listing requirements.

Bursa said yesterday a fine of RM11,250 was also imposed on Talam for failing to submit the company's quarterly report for the financial period ended July 31, 2006, on or before Sept 30, 2006.

It added that Talam was required to engage its external auditors to carry out a limited review on the company's next four quarterly results prior to their announcements.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia said it had reprimanded and imposed a RM2,000 fine on Kumpulan Europlus Bhd after the company failed to submit its interim earnings and annual reports within the required timeframe.

In a notice, Bursa said Kumpulan Europlus failed to furnish the company's first quarter to April 2006 financial report by June 30, 2006.

The company only furnished the first quarter report to Bursa on Aug 3, 2006, it said, adding that the company provided its fiscal 2006 annual report on Aug 2, after the July 31, 2006 deadline.

Going the Distance — A run and a reminder

MORE THAN 300 runners turned out in frigid temperatures to run the Garrett's 5K run Saturday morning, in a race that seems as relevant today as when the Garrett's Run began in 1996.

The Garrett's Run began as a way to make people aware that underage drinking and driving is a problem in Frederick County. In recent weeks, a teen died in a car crash driven by another teen who had been drinking. It was almost the same scenario that killed Garrett Petronchak, a student who was about to graduate from Frederick Community College, at the age of 19. Petronchak was a passenger in the back seat of a car driven by another underage driver. Petronchak had a blood alcohol level of about .09, the equivalent of about six beers, while the driver's blood alcohol level was considerably higher. The driver also survived that accident.

Town Council Notes: Byrd students get a taste of public service

Every spring selected seniors from the government class at William Byrd High School get to sit in on a regular Vinton Town Council meeting. Then the students have a chance to hold their own mock council session the next day. Tuesday night the students who attended the regular meeting saw an exercise in democracy that was livelier than most council proceedings - mainly because of an issue involving their school. After some discussion, the real town council voted as expected to hold the Fourth of July fireworks celebration at William Byrd High School in Roanoke County, since the War Memorial site within the town limits of Vinton is not an option this summer because of ongoing construction. "We'd hoped it would be a one-year relocation," said Town Manager Kevin Boggess, referring to the fireworks, music and concessions staged at the Byrd football stadium last year.

Insurance Company Splits When Claims Roll In

How would you like it if your insurance company refused to honor its deal and, rather than pay a claim, it only refunds a portion of the premium. When just such a practice outraged a bountiful woman, it was time to Get Gephardt. In this case, the insurance was in the form of a home owners warranty. The peace of mind was sold that if something goes wrong with such things as a furnace or a hot water heater, the warranty will fix the problem. But not in this caseWhen Calliene Curzon bought a condominium last year, she decided to take her real estate agents advice just incase any major appliances broke down. And so we purchased a Home warranty policy, says Calliene.Calliene paid $375 to Members Home Warranty, and the company cashed her check. The policy says it covers heating, and other home appliances, and she was glad she did.The furnace stopped working, says Calliene. That was just 4 days after Calliene moved in.

Who are the richest people in Uganda?

INGENUITY, not industry, is the common characteristic of the people who have featured in our rich list. These people made money in everything from media and real estate to coffee, farming and road haulage. The list is not limited to Ugandans and it includes individuals and families born overseas, but who predominantly work and/or live in Uganda.

We have measured identifiable wealth, whether land, property or significant shares in publicly quoted companies and we have excluded bank accounts to which we have no access.

There are probably a number of other wealthy individuals or families that we cannot know about because we have no way of ascertaining their wealth. They not only keep a low profile, but also avoid anything that will associate themselves with wealth.

Home Life: Elegant notion for daughter's wedding led to new business

Robin D'Orazio first spotted the chair covers on soap operas and liked the polished look they gave a wedding.

Slipped over hotel chairs, the satin covers and organza sashes or bows tied neatly around the chair backs ratchet up the elegance factor of wedding decor.
