WE WANT ONE OF THOSE: Like music and clothes, economic development has its hot fads and trends that everyone chases. One year it's software companies, the next biotech. So what's the big deal in economic development these days? Data centers. Washington has been in the thick of it, with companies like Ask.com (Moses Lake), Intuit and Microsoft (both in Quincy) and Yahoo (Wenatchee) all building or planning data centers in the state, in part to take advantage of cheap electricity prices. It's so hot a sector these days that there are actually consultants specializing in helping communities attract server farms. The Yakima County Development Association, operating as New Vision, reports that consulting firm AngelouEconomics, based in Austin, Texas, will spend two days in the area in late April evaluating it as a potential site for data centers.
Lawmakers review just-ended General Assembly
Tax cuts and education funding were the major accomplishments of the 86th General Assembly, and area legislators listed their inability to get a trauma center bill passed as the biggest disappointment. Sen. Shane Broadway, D-Bryant, said he believes the achievements can be attributed, in large part, to a former member: Gov. Mike Beebe. Beebe, a longtime member of the Arkansas Senate, who was inaugurated in January, received high marks from both sides of the aisle in both houses, Broadway said, for his willingness to listen and work with members of the Arkansas General Assembly. "The session ended on time and we accomplished many of the things we hoped to do," Broadway said. "I think a large part of that was because of the new governor.
