Flat tyres 'endanger car insurance premiums'
Many drivers may be risking their lives and their motor insurance premiums by driving with under-inflated tyres, it has been claimed.According to car services firm Kwik-Fit, which carried out a number of spot-checks on vehicles before drawing its conclusion, one in five UK drivers could be endangering themselves and their motor insurance premiums."Many drivers probably aren't aware that amongst other dangers, under inflated tyres can lead to a blow-out - where a tyre suddenly explodes during transit," said David White, customer services director at Kwik-Fit. Such a situation can cause alarm at the very least and a serious accident at the worst, he warned, advising drivers to get their tyre pressure checked on a regular basis.Just looking at the tyre to see if it has deflated is not always enough, Mr White added, stating that small losses of pressure were not always possible to detect through sight.Last weekend, Transport Minister Gillian Merron urged drivers to pump up their tyres - not as a way of protecting car insurance premiums, but as a measure to reduce the CO2 emissions caused by cars.Motorists could lower their car insurance premiums with Kwik-Fit Insurance - voted the UK's cheapest online motor insurer in 2006, according to research conducted last year.© Adfero Ltd
